Wellesley House opens up a world of opportunity for girls and boys aged from 7 to 13. Our primary aim is to prepare pupils for entry to their senior schools via Common Entrance or scholarship by creating the ideal boarding and classroom environment in which to develop a love of learning and so excel.
Academic success is a priority and results are excellent. The high expectations and support of Wellesley’s dedicated staff ensure pupils achieve. Our ethos is that success follows success, whether in or outside the classroom, and occurs naturally in pupils who are happy and motivated. All pupils are encouraged to push themselves and made to feel secure enough to take risks. Where there is additional educational need, it is identified and acted upon by trained Learning Support staff via Individual Education Plans and extra tuition can be provided for those requiring help.
Typically, our pupils move on to top independent schools such as King’s Canterbury, Harrow, Benenden, Eton, Tonbridge, Stowe, St Edmund’s and Ampleforth. This year, nearly a third of our leavers gained scholarships or exhibitions. Expert preparation and guidance for Common Entrance and the individual application procedure required for each senior school are tailored for each child. We aim to ensure their school of choice is the right choice, so that pupils continue to achieve long after they leave Wellesley.
Wellesley is a caring, family community where all children’s strengths, not just the academic, are recognised and actively nurtured. Our goal is to produce confident, motivated, well informed and well mannered Welleslians fully prepared to thrive at their senior schools and beyond. Learning is not limited to the classroom and a broad curriculum is enhanced by varied additional activities, visits and residential trips. Pupils are offered a comprehensive selection of competitive sport with a full fixture calendar for rugby, football, cricket, netball, hockey and rounders as well as opportunities to experience a wide range of activities including sailing, golf, fencing, rifle shooting and horse riding.
Music, art and drama are central to life at Wellesley through the choir, individual and group instrumental performances, major theatrical productions and vibrant art displays. The Senior School’s last production, a world amateur premiere of the updated ‘Half a Sixpence’, won well deserved praise, while even the youngest pupils impressed with their talent and energy in ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella’.
Wellesley’s beautiful grounds and enviable position on the South-east coast, allow plenty of opportunity for fresh air and beach walks, with easy access to London by car or high speed rail link, and a bus transfer for pupils. Boarders are in the majority, though day children integrate seamlessly, and the strength of the Old Welleslian alumni is testament to the lasting friendships and happy memories that are forged here. Wellesley encourages boys and girls to enjoy their childhood years whilst preparing them for life as busy, purposeful adults of the 21st century.
