The Lycem Alpinum Zuoz is one of the leading international boarding schools, set in the spectacular Alpine landscape of the Engadine valley. Today its student community comprises about 220 boarders and 100 day students. Our graduates study at top universities throughout the world, including Oxford, King’s College and St Andrews in the UK. They assume responsibility for themselves and contribute to successfully shaping the future. We therefore strive to continuously develop the quality of all the services we provide.
Our students receive an education which promotes intellectual, physical and emotional balance.
In our thriving international school community young people from the Engadine and from around the world can build the foundations for fulfilling and purposeful lives. As an ideologically independent school, we are guided by the values of individual creative endeavour, integrity and reliability. Inspired by the traditions of «The Spirit of Zuoz», our students develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as global citizens in a changing world.
The Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz combines both respect for tradition and innovation. The «Spirit of Zuoz» determines the five key concepts, which also define the academic and pastoral aims of education at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz: Learning for Life, Self-Discipline, Commitment, Fair Play and Cosmopolitanism. We carry out regular surveys among our senior students and appraisals of our teaching and boarding house staff to ensure that the school community adheres to the terms and the spirit of our school philosophy.
The extracurricular programme at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is particularly rich and varied. There are art and photography courses, two choirs and a school band, as well as our own Shakespeare Company. Politically interested debaters and budding journalists join the Forum Alpinum, while the Corps of Volunteers pursues humanitarian and relief projects in Switzerland and abroad. Given the fantastic Alpine location, there are myriad outdoor programmes during all seasons, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the International Award.
Physical education and games are fundamental to the way of life at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz. Since the 1920’s Eton fives and cricket have been the main school sports alongside ice hockey. Other major sports are skiing and snowboarding, as well as rugby, football, hockey, golf, tennis, basketball and volleyball. This school year our students won national (ice hockey, golf) and regional titles (football, skiing, snowboarding), while our girls won the Ladies Open at the National Schools’ Championships at Eton in 2009.
The Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is an IB World School. Since young people started studying here over 100 years ago, it has always been truly international. Today the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is home to students of more than 30 different nationalities. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) is a comprehensive university preparation course that demands the best from motivated students and teachers. It is based on an approach to learning involving critical inquiry and is aimed at the education of the whole person. Throughout the academic programme, our experienced careers department helps students make the right choices for their future and closely guides them through the admission process at European and North American colleges and universities.
