Knighton house School is an exceptional and unique school in the heart of Dorset
Our children receive a high quality education which caters for all abilities and all personalities. There is no doubt that the atmosphere and the glorious countryside surroundings enhance the children’s unforgettable experience at Knighton.
We are a non-selective school. Our Orchard Pre-Prep and nursery cater for girls and boys aged 3 to 7. The Prep school offers day education and a variety of boarding packages for girls aged 7 to 13.
The children are encouraged to investigate, to enquire, to question, to think, imagine and explore in their daily learning. We believe that it is imperative that a firm foundation is built in the early years of education and the building blocks of arithmetic, reading and writing are firmly in place. From this base we encourage the children to develop a love of learning and enjoy the wide variety of subjects on offer. Their educational journey prepares them well for the variety of senior schools to which they aspire.
We are proud of our fine musical tradition. Rarely does one find this level of excellence in a small prep-school. The choral life of the school is very special and of an exemplary standard. The children sing regularly, performing in school and in the wider community. Instrumental tuition and opportunities to be part of ensembles and orchestras are similarly of an excellent standard. Above all our children love to be involved, to perform with confidence and enjoy the musical and dramatic life of the school.
We endeavour to use the surrounding Dorset countryside to the full. It is integral to the academic learning, the sport and the children’s relaxation. Opportunities for various sports, including hockey, cross-country, netball, tennis, swimming, rounders and athletics, are entered into on a daily basis and our girls have reached national level in several areas over the last twelve months.
Living so close to the coast also makes sailing possible and many girls develop skills in this activity in the Summer term.
Ponies are very much a part of Knighton House School and gymkhanas, show jumping and hacks are entered into throughout the school year. Girls wishing to bring their own ponies can do so. Children are given riding lessons from the age of 6 and for many a real passion develops.
We pride ourselves on the comprehensive level of our boarding experience. We have a large number of full boarding children with a healthy contingent of flexi boarders. Our staff provide excellent pastoral care and a wealth of activities in the evenings and at weekends. The grounds, the countryside and Dorset amenities are enjoyed to the full.
The level of care and warmth at Knighton House is evident on crossing the threshold.
