Kent College, Canterbury

125 Years of Outstanding Education

The doors of Kent College first opened 125 Years ago. The college began life as a boys’ secondary school but is now a thriving school that provides outstanding education to boys and girls from the age of three to eighteen. There are four parts that make up the whole school: • Early years Foundation Stage (Nursery) • Infant and Junior • Senior School • International Study Centre. Today nestling in idyllic surroundings on the outskirts of Canterbury, Kent College provides an education for 660 children from the age of 3 to 18. The majority of the children come from the local community with slightly less than a quarter being made up of boarders who come from 29 different countries around the world.

Our own school buses bring students in from all over the county including: Ashford; Folkestone; Dover; Sittingbourne: Hythe; Sandwich and Herne Hill. Working parents take advantage of the fact that the school offers an extended school day to all of its pupils and even the option of staying over night when the need arises. This extra time at school is put to excellent use and contributes greatly to the undoubted success of all of the pupils.

Laptops for all pupils

Having come a long way from the chalk and slate of 125 years ago all students at Kent College are to be issued with a laptop computer. The first issue is being rolled out in January with the rest of the school following in September. This initiative is student focused and the computer will be used much as a universal textbook and resource with the additional facility of writing tool, simulation/modelling tool and media player.

Introduction of the International Baccalaureate

Kent College has recently been recognised as a world school and is delighted to be able to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma alongside it’s A level courses from September. IB Diploma Programme students study six courses ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics

In addition the programme has three core requirements that are the extended essay, theory of knowledge, creativity/action/service that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding:

We know that the IB will suit some of our students allowing them to pursue more subjects and crediting them for the work that they already do in the community and on the sports field.

Why start at three

When we look back at the high flyers who leave us at the age of 18 it is very interesting to see how many of them entered the school at the age of three. Not just academically able but also accomplished team players in sport; eloquent musicians: contributors to the school society and beyond; leaders of their own peer group and role models to youngsters at the school. How is it achieved?

High expectations Searching out and developing talent Encouraging each individual to be the best that they can Not allowing anyone to be overlooked A fantastic array of opportunities Most importantly celebrating every success.
