Riverview School At A Glance
Riverview is a co-educational, boarding school, which services 180 students, ages 11–19 in the middle and secondary program, and ages 18–22 in the post-secondary program (GROW) with a 5-week summer option.
Our students are gentle, friendly and naïve with IQs in the 70 – 100 range, with no significant behavioral or emotional problems. Riverview serves adolescents and young adults with complex language, learning and cognitive disabilities. The School specializes in thematic, integrated, language-based curriculum, taught by licensed faculty who utilize research-validated instructional approaches.
We encourage typical teenage activities and have a “no-cut” athletic program. Real life opportunities help to generalize skills. In addition, comprehensive health care services and licensed speech and language pathologists help to provide a safe, supportive and structured family school.
Middle & Secondary Program
Students in grades 6-12 receive direct and individualized academic instruction, in reading, writing and math, as well as physical education and electives. The student teacher ratios in middle school and secondary are 8:1.
To encourage personal growth and development the head teacher for each academic team, dormitory coordinator, residential supervisor and advisor meet weekly to discuss student specific issues.
Strategies taught include problem-solving, self-advocacy and social competence, and a licensed social worker works with each student and serves as a liaison to families.
Riverview strives to develop responsible, independent, community oriented students where life skills, such as planning for independent recreational activities, cooking and time management are practiced.
Interscholastic sports (Intramural, Jr. Varsity, Varsity), comprehensive, typical teen, after school activities, and social skills / pragmatic instruction are integrated into the
students’ daily lives with a state-of-the-art fitness center and gymnasium.
The Health Care Center is staffed by a team of nurses and medical assistants and staff teach students to better understand and advocate for their health needs and focus on proper nutrition and fitness.
G.R.O.W.
G.R.O.W. (Getting Ready for the Outside World) Riverview’s 10 month post-secondary program, for students who have completed our secondary school or another high school, is designed to provide students with the skills that will assist them in functioning more independently within the adult world.
The G.R.O.W. curriculum includes both academic and vocational skill development and independent living skills training.
Each student is assigned an advisor who serves as a liaison between home and school and provides student support, including social skills guidance, problem solving and self-advocacy.
Transition planning services include an on-campus post-secondary fair, transition
weekend for families to explore long term transition options, and the services of a transition coordinator.
Students are actively involved in all aspects of daily life including cooking and laundry, and learn to budget time, manage relationships, and plan for social activities.
Students are taught to oversee their own health and medication routines and to advocate for their health needs, focusing on proper nutrition and fitness.
We offer on and off-campus job training and students have the opportunity to participate in Project Forward at Cape Cod Community College, where mainstream courses are also available when appropriate.
