The most consistently high-performing co-educational school in Sussex
Set in 550 acres of Sussex downland on the south coast between Chichester and Brighton, Lancing College provides the perfect environment for girls and boys to develop at their own pace and attain their individual potential. Its soaring Chapel is a local landmark and forms the centrepiece of the school both spiritually and architecturally. Christian values are at the core of a Lancing education.
Lancing is a traditional senior boarding school but the exceptionally good facilities benefit both day and boarding pupils. One of the most important factors of College life is the pastoral care; every child has a personal academic tutor and support for the individual is paramount. Mutual respect underpins stimulating teaching and traditional qualities sit comfortably alongside cutting-edge technology. There is a full-time Learning Support Coordinator and able pupils with mild learning difficulties can thrive at Lancing. The vast majority of the 500 students live within a fifty mile radius and family involvement with the school community is encouraged. Road and rail links make Lancing easily accessible from all over southern England and school bus services operate in all directions.
Sporting opportunities are wide-ranging; superb indoor and outdoor amenities are all found on the campus. Lancing is one of the foremost football, hockey and cricket schools, and has a strong reputation for squash, swimming and cross-country. Professional coaches give tuition in all the major sports and an extensive fixture list is arranged. Pupils are encouraged to aim for representative honours at county, regional and national level as well as at school.
Lancing has a long-established tradition of choral and orchestral music and the thriving Music Department provides an environment where talented pupils aim for the highest standards. The Chapel Choir gives several concerts each year and has recently released a CD entitled 'Surrexit.' At the other end of the musical spectrum student rock bands regularly entertain, most memorably in the College's open-air theatre. All members of the school have outlets for music-making and over half the pupils receive instrumental tuition.
Drama also plays a very important role in school life. There is a purpose-built theatre with a full-time technician and regular productions for all age groups. Pupils not only have the opportunity to act but to learn play-writing skills and stage crafts such as lighting and make-up. Recent productions include the costume drama 'Amadeus,' Lorca’s 'Blood Wedding' and a lively and moving production of 'West Side Story.'
In 2008 a strikingly original new Art School was created next to the Design and Technology Centre. With floor to ceiling windows, this distinctive, contemporary building commands magnificent views across the Downs to the sea. It contains two large studios and many other working and display areas, where painting, drawing, photography, pottery, sculpture and print-making can all take place under one roof.
The land immediately round the school buildings is home to the College Farm, which cares for a fascinating variety of animals. Under the supervision of the Farm Manager, a number of dedicated pupils obtain first hand experience of husbandry and valuable skills for those wishing to study veterinary medicine or agriculture. Team work and leadership qualities are developed in the Combined Cadet Force and many pupils participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme or the Outreach Programme, working with the elderly, homeless and disadvantaged.
Lancing College offers the best of modern boarding and day education in a place where individuals can thrive and develop safely and happily. A range of scholarships and awards, which may be augmented by means-tested bursaries, is available for entry at ages 13 and 16.
The College hosts Open Mornings in May and September and also strongly encourages individual visits by families throughout the year.
